Shortage of 22,357 employees in Southern Railway – Request to fill vacancies | Shortage of 22,357 employees in Southern Railway – Request to fill vacancies

Chennai: Southern Railway Train Users Advisory Committee member R. Pandyaraja said, "Inspite of high demand, there is not enough train driver, train manager (card) and ticket examiner to operate additional special trains on the Tambaram-Tirunelveli route. The shortage of security forces needs to be addressed immediately. He demanded that adequate staff should be hired.

Similarly, shortage of staff at ticket counters often leads to disputes between railway staff and passengers, especially in the Tambaram – Chengalpattu section where there is a shortage of staff at many ticket counters. Chennai Egmore railway station till a few years back had 6 to 10 counters to issue unreserved tickets for express and suburban trains. Passengers said that at present, 1 or 2 counters are functioning and passengers have to wait for a long time during peak hours.

Apart from this, about 471 posts are vacant in various positions in Train Drivers category.

Recruitment Tasks: The Southern Railway officials said: Recruitment for filling 19,021 vacant posts in 6 divisions has been completed in various stages. Appointment orders have been issued for 6,755 posts and some of them have joined the service. Recruitment for remaining 12,226 posts is going on. Apart from this, the physical examination for filling 9,212 Group C posts was completed in January. The document verification of the successful candidates will be scheduled soon," he said.
