Erode by-elections must be held fairly – HC orders Election Commission to file assurance report | Erode by-elections must be held fairly – HC directs Election Commission to file assurance report

Chennai : The High Court has directed the Election Commission to file a report assuring that the Erode East by-election will be held in a fair and honest manner.

In this regard, AIADMK organizational secretary and MP CV Shanmugam has said in the petition filed in the High Court:

In the Erode by-election, officials are working in favor of the ruling party. The names of those who are not related to the constituency are included in the voter list. Names of deceased voters are not deleted. Many voters' names appear in more than 2 places.

There are a total of 2 lakh 26 thousand 876 voters in the constituency. In this, the names of 7,947 deceased persons have been included. 30 thousand 56 voters are not in the constituency. It has come to light that the ruling party is planning to rig the vote in favor of the Congress by using this.

A minister who is in charge of elections in the ruling party has publicly spoken to the executives about the money laundering.

Since the Election Officer, the District Collector and the District Superintendent of Police are working in favor of the ruling party, the Election Commission should be directed to engage the Central Reserve Forces in the election work.

Also, it should be directed to verify voters on the basis of voter ID card and not on the basis of booth slip and allow them to vote. The Election Commission should be directed to conduct the elections in a fair and honest manner. This was requested in the petition.

The case came up for hearing yesterday in a session consisting of Chief Justice D. Raja and Justice D. Bharatha Chakraborty. Then on the part of the Election Commission, a list of voters with double registration has been prepared separately and sent to the concerned polling stations. 409 policemen belonging to the Central Reserve Force have been engaged in the election security work. Apart from this, flying troops will also be involved in election work.

All election proceedings will be recorded through surveillance cameras. Based on the Photo Voter List, only eligible voters will be allowed to vote. All steps have been taken to prevent fake driving. It was assured that the best possible arrangements have been made to conduct this by-election in a fair and honest manner.

On behalf of the petitioner CV Shanmugam, it was requested that the action taken by the Election Commission should be ordered to be filed as a report.

Accepting it, the judges ordered that the action taken by the Election Commission regarding the Erode East by-election should be filed as a report and postponed the hearing to the 20th.
